3D Printing and Medicine

There were two twin boys conjoined at the head, but before being wheeled into the operating room, their team of surgeons was able to plan ahead with 3D models of the boys’ actual sculls. Taken from CT scans, the models were created with a 3D printer, and they gave the surgeons the unique ability to accurately assess every step of the very complex surgery.
Doctors are already doing wonderful work with the available 3D scanning and printing technologies, but the potential seems endless. Prosthetics and implants are the next step, with doctors being able to order and create exactly what patients will need.
And moving forward, it isn’t outside the realm of possibility that doctors could print actual body parts, like organs or bone pieces, out of biological materials and stem cells.
The possibilities are endless.
