The Legatum Institute, a US-based think tank, reviewed several countries with successful healthcare systems. They measured each country’s performance based on basic physical and mental health, health infrastructure and preventative care.
The rated countries all shared similar characteristics, such as:
- Aging populations
- Alcohol and tobacco being key risk factors
- Universal healthcare (most of the rated countries)
- A majority of satisfied patients
- National spending does not equate with care
Of the countries ranked, USA Today ranked their top five:
- Singapore
- Switzerland
- Japan
- Australia
- Israel
