New Data Impacts the Standard of Spine Care

Alexander Vaccaro, MD, and Charles Fisher, MD, examined six areas of spinal intervention to determine if clinical norms were the best course of action. They wrote a paper detailing their findings, which are surprising to the medical community.
Their opinion is that recent research shows that clinical norms for spinal treatment may not generate the best outcomes for all patients or even the most cost-effective treatment.
"This finding has truly changed surgeon behavior as the norm now is the addition of satellite rods and alternative fusion techniques after pedicle subtraction osteotomy which may significantly improve implant durability at long-term follow-up," the doctors wrote in their initial article for Medscape.
The six areas they studied are:
- Rigid brace for symptomatic osteoporotic compression fracture
- Interspinous devices for lumbar stenosis
- Managing lumbar spondylosis
- Degenerative disc disease diagnosis and management
- Spinal deformity
- Rod insertion for spinal deformity patients
